Who was Arthur Teichman and how did he become Arthur Murray?
When you hear the name Arthur Murray, the name will automatically relate it to the name of the largest dance studio chain. He has been a man who has been passionate in teaching ballroom dancing to everyone at the same time a successful businessman. So, who exactly is Arthur Murray? Born under the name Arthur Teichman in April 4, 1895 in New York City, he was once an introvert in his younger days. To add to that, Arthur Teichman he had been insecure of being tall and long-limbed as well as his family’s financial instability. In spite of this, he still wanted to join social activities where he came to realize of his talent in dancing with the help of his friend who taught him about it. With this, he has found his self confidence and gain popularity among young women and took every opportunity of social gatherings just to practice dancing.
With his dancing prowess, Arthur Teichman joined a dance contest at Grand Central Palace where he won. He dropped out of Morris High School in Bronx and worked with an architect. Though initially, he intended to become an architect, his love for dancing made him decide to quit his job and went further training at Castle Hall where he met Baroness de Kuttleson who was a famous instructor. Because of the America’s anti-German sentiment, it was Baroness de Kuttleson who advised him to drop his German sounding surname. From that day on, he was known as Arthur Murray. They became partners in teaching people how to dance but ended shortly after Arthur Teichman was cheated with regards to payment. After that, he went to Atlanta to pursue a business management degree while still being a dance instructor. Amazingly, he gained more fame and success in teaching dance to people that he was even featured in Forbes magazine for earning $15,000 a year as a dance instructor. Seeing great future in teaching people to dance, Arthur Teichman made his dance studio in Atlanta. He also taught dancing via radio and even via mail which was an innovation at that time. His business in his Arthur Murray Correspondence School of Dancing became a success hence in 1923; he returned to New York and established an office. There, he hired a lot of lot of staff and eventually put up his dance studio hence, this is also the time when he met Kathryn who became his wife.
The rise of the dance studio that Arthur Teichman established flourished that he launched it into a franchising business hence spawned the Arthur Murray Dance Studios. In order to live up to his vision, he would personally screen his instructors that would be entrusted with his passion. Arthur Teichman has even taught famous people and had his own TV Show called The Arthur Murray Party to promote his dance studio.
