The Living Dance Floor
Do you ever think that the wood you are dancing on was once a living, breathing tree? It was out in the rain, cold and sleet and snow? Do you stand tall and draw up the energy of life from the wood beneath you? I do and I always think about the life that comes from the dance floor.
The wood that we dance on was once subject to the harshness of winter, the rebirth and renewal of spring, the dog days of summer, and the return to rest of the autumn days and nights. The trees drank in the healing rays of the sun, provided shelter to mankind during the rain, and a home to many animals throughout the year. The changing of the seasons brought beauty and poetry to the birth and death of the leaves that give us oxygen and breath.
When we step on the floor, we have the ability to allow the life of the wood to flow through us. As we move, if we permit it, the energy of life can flow through us. We can give life to our dancing, the music, our partners, and our audience.
Try this, the next time you begin your dance warm up, greet the ballroom. Take in the wonderful space that you are using for your dancing. Then, close your eyes and feel the energy of the once living floor through your feet, legs, body, heart and soul. Use your imagination to open up to this new level of inspiration and enjoy the excitement of dancing through joy of living.
For Foxtrot, brush your feet over the foor, then let your steps glide in the Waltz. Strongly walk your feet for the staccato action of Tango. Now, dig your feet into the floor for Cuban motion in Rumba, Cha Cha and Salsa. Try to press your feet into the wood and pull out the energy of the floor up through your body to make your dancing come alive.
Imagination, that’s all it takes. Give yourself a quiet moment and look at the dance floor. Then watch the dancers glide and move across it. Now, you dance it yourself. Feel the healing energy, passion and energy of the dance flowing through you. Be a poet, be a dreamer and let your dancing take control for a moment in time.
Next week, we’ll talk about how to deal with discouragement. This will be an important installment in our quest for overall health and dancing fitness!
Very Sincerely,
David Woodbury
